1990年代、ミュージカル『レント』はロックミュージカルを復活させたといわれていた。そして新世紀を迎えた今、ロックミュージカルに新たな息吹きを吹き込んだのが、映画『ヘドウィグ・アンド・アングリーインチ』だ。スティーヴン・トラスクの音楽とジョン・キャメロン・ミッチェル（彼はお粗末な性転換手術の不幸な犠牲者となった強烈な風貌の主人公、ヘドウィグも演じている）の歌詞をもとに制作されたこのミュージカルは、ロックミュージカル史上最高の出来といっても過言ではないだろう。
サントラは、全体に速いテンポになっていることを除けば、オリジナルキャストアルバム（『Hedwig And The Angry Inch: Original Cast Recording』）にかなり忠実に作られている。<3>（ミリアム・ショアによるバックヴォーカルがところどころに入っている）と<8>のようにもともと速い曲はより激しくロックしている。一方、 <6> や<9>のようなバラードはさらに情感が深まった。オフブロードウェイのオリジナルキャストでのレコーディングもよくできていた。しかしこのサントラの方が、すべてがより鮮明にくっきりと描き出されているようだ。ヘドウィグのバックバンドであるアングリーインチですら、元ハスカー・ドゥのボブ・モールドをギターに迎えて増強され、ガールズ・アゲンスト・ボーイズが参加した<12>は昔のデビッド・ボウイのアルバムに入っていそうな曲に仕上がっている。

The musical Rent is said to have revived the rock musical in the 1990s, but it's Hedwig and the Angry Inch that could revive the genre's movie fortunes in the new millennium. Adapted and directed from Stephen Trask's music and lyrics by John Cameron Mitchell, who also reprises the lead role of Hedwig, the flamboyantly unlucky victim of a botched sex-change operation, this is as good as a rock musical gets.
The soundtrack follows the cast album pretty faithfully, except that the whole thing somehow feels turbocharged. Fast numbers like "Angry Inch" (with fab backup vocals by Miriam Shor) and "Exquisite Corpse" rock harder; ballads like "The Long Grift" and "Midnight Radio" are more poignant.
